Tom's Journal - Prolog
Friday, June 5th:
Three more packing days to go! We are leaving Monday, June 8th. Still more to do but most things are done. Oh ya, need to get a haircut today. I fixed the right tail light on the trailer; always something to do.
We have planned our basic route and identified the major towns, areas, and highlights to see. But, our actual route and timetable is not set; we will figure it out as we go. I have planned out the first week and we do have reservation at Denali (Mount McKinley) at the campground and at the North Face Lodge (in the park) July 4-12. Will we see fireworks at Denali? I doubt it as it will still be light out past 1:00 AM.
The first five days are not planned for sightseeing, or relaxing much. Because we have reservation in Denali in July, I want to get up north to Dawson Creek, Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway, somewhat quickly before starting to tour around. This will leave buffer time incase something happens and we need repairs or other unexpected events occur. I learned this from my in-laws RV trip to Alaska last year.
So , the first week's plan:
- Monday, leave Folsom and drive to S. Oregon, 450 miles
- Tuesday, drive to USA / Canadian border, 430 miles
- Wednesday, cross the boarder (if we forget our passports we will have to use one of the smugglers' tunnels, I have a list from the Internet), drive to Cache Creek, British Columbia, 190 miles
- Thursday, drive to Prince George, British Columbia, 250 miles
- Friday, drive to Dawson Creek, Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway, 260 miles
- Spend the weekend in Dawson Creek and see the attractions for the Alaskan Highway
