2017 - Midwest, There and Back Again

Quite a common sight in the rivers and streams at Yellowstone NP, fly fishing.  The lakes, rivers, and streams along with the lush green vegetation does make Yellowstone NP very beautiful, if you can get rid of all the crowds.

More thermal stuff.  What Yellowstone is most known for.

We took the Firehole Lake Drive, a short loop off the main road that most of the crowd ignored but it was very scenic and interesting and far less crowded.

Surprise Pool (its name) along the drive.

Great Fountain Geyser “May erupt between 1:45 PM and 5:45 PM.”  We didn’t wait.

White Dome Geyser.  We don’t know when it might erupt.

Steady Geyser.  The end of the drive.  Okay, enough thermal stuff.

Back on the main loop.  Kepler Cascades.

Becky at our lunch spot.  Nice and peaceful break.

The Continental Divide.  We crossed the divide numerous time at numerous spots while exploring Yellowstone NP and Grand Tetons NP.  I guess we couldn’t decide if we wanted to head east or west.

Yellowstone Lake.  This is a view of a small part of the Yellowstone Lake Thumb.  It is a very large lake.

Aah, finally the elusive Bison.

The many calm rivers of Yellowstone.

Okay, maybe not always so calm!  I knew I forgot something, where is my kayak!!!

Well, maybe the bison aren’t so elusive.  Now they seem to be everywhere.  And causing traffic jams.

The Mud Volcano Area.  Another short hike around a thermal area.

What’s this!  Along the boardwalk, a bison is trying to shed its winter coat against a tree and pesky tourists keep being an annoyance.  It appears from park films, bison don’t usually attack but just like certain people, you get them annoyed and they will lose their cool.

A view of the parking lot at the Mud Volcano Area.  This one is not overcrowded.  What a relief.

Dragon’s Mouth Spring.

More bison.  Okay, that’s enough!

Our first, and best elk viewing.  The one in the back said, “let’s get out of here guys!”

So long.

Brink of Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River.  I still can’t find my kayak.  One of the pleasant surprises we found was the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River that is.

The Lower Falls.

Okay, spectacular.  Looking downstream at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.

Falls in the canyon.

Another view, awesome.
