Spring 2018 RV Adventure

The Burgoyne Travels

On May 14th, we migrated from Green River to Salt Lake City to re-provision, do laundry, and clean.

A big congratulation to Salt Lake City on their making it to the finals of "Unnavigable Highway Systems." It must be a huge honor for them. Just with the freeway layout itself, they have created a near impossible set of freeway interchanges. As an example, in one area, they used the ingenious tactic of merging two busy three-lane freeways with less than a quarter mile to navigate traffic and changes lanes to get off on a busy off-ramp. I barely accomplished this feat in the Jeep. I doubt I could have accomplished this with the motorhome towing the Jeep; luckily, I didn't have to try. Added to their already confusing freeway interchange system is the creative use of road construction with lane closures and traffic barrels to dodge. I am sure SLC is posed to do extremely well in the finals.

On May 16, we took a bus tour of Salt Lake City to learn more about the city and its history. Of course, learning about SLC's history is learning about the Mormon migration from upstate New York, through several locations moving west, until their eventual settling in SLC. There were great challenges in creating an inhabitable community in SLC. One of the biggest was fresh water and irrigation.

View of Salt Lake City. Imagine the first pioneers arriving to this valley with no water or trees, just barren land.

The Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City.

Bringham Young's house. It was added onto since he lived there. How many wives did he have??? Think of all the bickering they did in this house.

The grand pipe organ in the SLC tabernacle. They hold weekly radio broadcast from here and this is where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir often performs. They have daily 30-minute organ recitals. At least there wasn't any drums.

Utah State Capitol. I wonder if they have any better luck then the one in D.C.
