Planes, Trains, Cars, Boats, and Islands (part
1)
Due to the number of pictures, this week's travel log is split into three parts. Here are links to the other parts:
This week we left Matthew and family after a great visit and headed to the Great Lakes. The shores of the Great Lakes are mostly major cities and recreational areas. We are finding some sightseeing opportunities mixed in. We visited Detroit, St Ignace/Mackinac, and Sault Ste. Marie, which included seeing three of the five Great Lakes: Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior.
Since we did have some good sightseeing stops, there are a lot of pictures and the log is divided into three parts.
Snapshot of week's route
Monday, June 9:
We traveled from the Indianapolis, Indiana area to the
Detroit, Michigan area. Our route took us through Ohio for
much of the day.
Once a blue-collar, industrial center known for the core of
the American automotive industry, Motor-City, Detroit is now suffering with high
unemployment and the shrinkage of several of its suburbs. Our
brief stay did not take us to any of these areas. We found a
nice RV park in Ypsilanti, Michigan (I like saying that) for three
nights.
Tuesday, June 10:
We headed to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village for a full day of American industrial history.
F.O.R.D. = Fix Or Repair Daily. This was close to my
experience with my first car, a 1966 Ford Mustang. I loved
that car and wish I still had it.
As expected, the Henry Ford Museum has lots of cars from
all manufacturers but it includes many other exhibits also,
including: “Heroes of the Sky, Adventures in Early Flight,” “With
Liberty and Justice for All (civil rights movement),” “Made in
America – Power,“ "Made in America – Manufacturing,” plus several
others.

The car President Kennedy was assasinated in. Afterwards, the Secret Service enclosed it and it was used for other presidents. |

1956 Ford Thunderbird. The classic. |
1965 Goldenrod - held the land speed record for more than 25 years! This was at the Bonneville Salt Flats. When we were there, all we got was a flat tire. |
Two early all-electric cars. Tesla has a lot of catching up to do! |
I need this following my Ford F250 with diesel fuel. |

Various early airplanes were displayed. |
Seating in the early days was MUCH better and more comfortable than today! |
Greenfield Village:
On the same grounds as the Henry Ford Museum is Greenfield Village.
Our train ride around the village.
We took a ride in a 1914 Ford Model-T. |
The 1914 Ford Model-T that we had our ride in. |
Wednesday, June 11:
The oven works!!! We had Baked Cranberry Chicken for dinner.
There are many other things to see in Detroit but we took
the day off in need of relaxing, laundry, and shopping. If we
had more time, it would have been great to hit the lakefront
(Detroit is on Lake Huron) as well as see other sights.
