Planes, Trains, Cars, Boats, and Islands (part
2)
Due to the number of pictures, this week's travel log is split into three parts. Here are links to the other parts:
Thursday, June 12:
From Detroit, we headed to St. Ignace, Michigan just across
the Mackinac Bridge. Mackinac is sometimes spelled “Mackinac”
and sometimes "Mackinaw" but the pronunciation is always “Mackinaw.”
We had a nice campsite with a great view of Lake Michigan.
Friday, June 13:
Our plan to visit Mackinac Island was superseded by a 40-50
degree day, overcast, and winds 20-30 mph. Change of plans;
let’s head up to Sault Ste. Marie and do what the big boats do, go
through the Soo Locks!
The Soo Locks connect Lake Superior with Lake Huron.
There is a difference of about 21 feet between the lakes so the
locks were built to allow the Great Lakes freighters to move between
the lakes.
It was cold, rainy, windy, and dreary but we had fun.
The boat had an enclosed lower deck and an open upper deck where it
was freezing with the wind chill. We spent a lot of time on
the upper deck for the view but retreated to the lower deck for
warmth.
Our boat
We followed a tug boat into one of the US side locks. |
The gate closes behind us on our journey to Lake Superior. |
Heading out, there are two freighters waiting to pass through. |
After touring around for a while, time to head back. |
This time, we use the Canadian lock. |
Gate closes behind us. The Canadian lock is for smaller vessels. |
What goes up, must come down. Gates open. |
Back to Lake Huron. |
